Tel-Aviv Jafa

Old Jaffa

Jaffa, also known as Yafo, boasts a rich tapestry woven over millennia. This ancient port city, now a charming district of Tel Aviv,  stands as a testament to its long and storied past. Dating back some 3,500 years, Jaffa’s strategic location on the Mediterranean Sea and the “Via Maris” trade route, connecting Egypt and Mesopotamia, fueled its rise to prominence.

Layers upon layers of civilizations left their mark, literally and figuratively. Settlers built upon a hill next to the sea, gradually creating the elevated “Tel” (mound) that offers stunning views of modern Tel Aviv today.

The Jaffa Port, believed to be the departure point for Jonah in the biblical story, is one of the oldest in the world.  For centuries, it served as a vital trade hub in the Eastern Mediterranean. Today, the port is a vibrant cultural attraction, with a charming harbor for local fishermen and vendors alongside modern art exhibitions and captivating historical centers.

Stepping away from the port, Jaffa’s narrow alleys and ancient buildings in the Old City transport visitors to a world far removed from the bustling metropolis of Tel Aviv.  The Jaffa Flea Market offers a treasure trove of unique finds, from Turkish carpets to original artwork.

Jaffa’s story is one of resilience and rebirth, knowing many periods of decline and rebirth throughout its long history. Avisit to Jaffa is one of hostory, biblical stories, food, art, and authentic local cultural exposure.
