Tel-Aviv Jafa

The American Colony

One of Tel Aviv’s most hidden gems is the American Colony neighborhood. Settled quietly between Florentin and Neve Tzedek, this neighborhood offers a surprising mix of history and modern life. Cobblestone streets lead you past charming wooden homes, a stunning stained-glass church, and even some abandoned structures, creating a truly unique atmosphere in the middle of rugged south TLV.

The story of the American Colony begins in 1866, when over 150 Christian Americans, fueled by faith, arrived from Maine seeking to establish a new life in Palestine. Led by a man named George Adams, they built their homes in the familiar New England style, in stark contrast to the surrounding architecture. However, the dream was not able to meet reality, as hardships and illness forced many to leave, and German settlers from the Templar Movement soon took their place.

After the Amercans, the Germans who settled in the homes added their own touch, as well as constructed the beautiful Immanuel Church, which still stands today. This Neo-Gothic marvel is open for tours, allowing visitors to admire its red-tiled roof and exquisite stained-glass windows. The Beit Immanuel Hostel, once the heart of the German community, now welcomes pilgrims seeking a peaceful stay.

The Maine Friendship House, one of the best-preserved American homes, now opens its doors for free on weekends. Here, you might even get a personal tour from the owners themselves! The Colony isn’t stuck in the past. Modernity peeks through with “The Village,” a new residential complex that echoes the New England colonial style. It even incorporates an original building from the neighborhood, creating a fascinating link between past and present.

So, if you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure in Tel Aviv, the American Colony is a very charming area to explore and walk through. Here, you get a unique blend of history, architecture, and culture, within a and walkable area close to Neve Tzedek, Florentin, and other great-to-visit parts of the city.
